This year, between January 2012 and February 2013 there were many highlights. The club has continued to develop and is as strong as ever at all age groups. Coaches, managers, scorers, our website manager, and our treasurer have worked hard to ensure the club runs smoothly and players enjoy their cricket, and we can be proud of belonging to such a club.
At present there are 68 players registered with the club. This number has fluctuated between 65 and 75 in the past year. The players range in age between 6-17 years. 7 coaches worked with the players and each team has a manager. There are five teams – Under 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17. Parents have continued to support the club enthusiastically during matches and tournaments and we are grateful for all their help with the many little jobs necessary to run a club of this size.
A large amount of information can always be found on our ‘newish’ homepage www.zurich-crickets.ch. It has always been kept up-to-date and is a hugely important source of information not only for club members, but many others too. Many thanks to Philippa Mackie. In the period Christmas Eve until January 20th we recorded almost 1000 hits.
Indoor season: In the winter months of January, February and March indoor interclub matches took place at all levels. The club players were able to train every week at the Hottingen gyms in Zurich and occasionally at the ZIS hall in Adliswil, while the home matches all took place at the ZIS hall in Adliswil. We ran several very well attended national Under 15 days at Adliswil, a Swiss Under 17 indoor Challenge Cup at Adliswil, our Under 12 team travelled to Munich and won at the Bavaria Cup, we entered four teams at the Basel Indoor Tournament winning the Under 15 trophy, and we won both the Under 15 and Under 13 CDL tournaments in Geneva.
Special events
Hampshire Camp: As a build-up to the outdoor season the club organised for its members our now traditional cricket development camp from April 28th – May 1st in Zurich with
Hampshire coaches John Cook and Chris Wheeler. The second one within a year, which took place in January 2013, was also a huge success. Here the emphasis was more on the development of individual
players and coaches. This is a form definitely to be repeated.
The COOP Letzipark event made us many friends among bemused shoppers in the Zurich area. ‘Cricket in a Cage’ was enjoyed by all those who participated and many thanks to everyone for this PR event. An event with the Red Cross Youth in Zurich was also a great success.
Outdoor season: Between the months of April and September a number of interclub matches took place. All club players were involved in these matches against Basel Dragons, Gingins CC, Cossonay CC, Geneva Region Youth CC, and Collège du Léman.
At the 7th Zuoz Junior Tournament in June we were represented by four teams. The teams did well in their age groups, with two second places, a third, and a winning Under 17 team.
At the Leman Cup and Suisse vs Schweiz matches, which were held in Cossonay in September, ZCCC players performed well in their respective teams.
Internationally ZCCC players also did well in 2012. Nineteen ZCCC players were selected for the various national teams that toured to Denmark, Cambridgeshire, Surrey and
Luxembourg in 2012:
Under 17: Sinan Khan, Bruce Baumann, Joe Boucher, Callum Hirst, George Gaillet
Under 15: Paulina Kratky, Simon Henderson, Moaz Butt, James Boakes, James Gaillet
Under 13: Ruan Kruger, Anthony Palmiero, Nic Henderson, Matthew Collins,
Under 11: Luke Specogna, Dayn Pariaug, Ben Harris, Vikram Bannur, Chris Langford.
New indoor season: After October ZCCC players once again moved indoors for their training sessions. The Gingins Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 National Indoor Tournaments took place in November in Geneva.
On 3rd November the third Zurich Crickets CC Awards Evening took place at the Restaurant Park im Gruene in Rüschlikon. This event was very well attended by over sixty members and an enjoyable evening was had by all.
On 10th November, the 11th Kids‘ Charity Gala Evening took place. Zurich Crickets Cricket Club was selected as a beneficiary of the 2012 Kids’ Charity Gala and was presented with a cheque of CHF 18,000 by the organisers Daniel Model and Ruth Kauflin.
Bob Barber Awards: At the beginning of December the Annual Swiss Awards for young players were presented by the Swiss Cricket Association in Geneva. No less than three ZCCC players were recognised at the best cricketers in the five age groups and received Bob Barber Awards.
In mid-December, the traditional end of the year Parents vs Players matches took place and were enjoyed by everyone in Adliswil. A record 78 players were involved.
Looking to the future, on 16th March a scoring course has been organised for ZCCC members. Likewise, on April 6th an umpiring course has been organised for ZCCC members. There is also a Level I coaching course on the weekend of 13/14 April in Basel. We need coaches, scorers and umpires to run this club.
Finally, we are hoping to have Hampshire over again on May 4/5 to help get our teams in shape for the outdoor season. The timing should be perfect as a number of players will be involved in national tours to Surrey and Cambridgeshire in May. A club Under 15 tour to Surrey will also take place in May.
Many thanks to everyone involved with the club and we look forward to another full year of cricket – our ninth year!
Patrick Henderson (President ZCCC) March 2013
