Club Dinner and Awards Night raises money for Cricket Without Boundaries charity (21st September)
The well-attended Club annual 'Dinner and Awards Night' took place in Weisslingen at the former fire brigade building 'Sprützehüüsli' on Saturday 20th September.
Beginning with a farewell to Madhav Sivaram, our Under 9/11 coach, and his family, reviews of the season were then given by the age-group coaches. These culminated in the awards for exceptional seasons that were presented to the players. Ruan Kruger was this year's winner of the prestigious Favotto Cup, an award which demands cricket ability/skill and match performance but also includes overall contribution to the club's culture.
Providing the evening with a different note Juliet Patel informed the club members about the work of the UK-registered charity 'Cricket Without Boundaries' whose mission is:
In order to raise money for the charity Stephen Hirst skillfully auctioned off cricket equipment during the evening. Together with many generous donations by club members the equivalent of roughly £500 will now go towards the work being done in Africa by this charity.
A big thankyou to everyone who contributed towards the success of the evening: there were some excellent desserts provided, a large variety of drinks, and plenty of helpers to set up the hall, to assist with the serving of the food and clearing up thoughout.
Saturday 13 September 2014 - Club Open Day, Deutweg
In the morning a number of U11/U12/U13 players braved the drizzle to take part in some cricketing skills exercises: distance hitting and throwing, bowling accuracy and throwing accuracy. Afterwards a game was organised in the dry-playing area, which included several new players.
In the afternoon the sun emerged, the ground began to dry out and an Under 15+ match with players from Gingins, Basel and Zurich took place. In the 35-over game between two evenly matched teams there were some good performances with the bat in Team A by Mustafa A in particular, Chris L, Ruan K and Nic H to reach 128. They were restricted in their scoring by some fine bowling by Ziad N (5 for 19 - 5 overs), Rohan J (3 for 14 - 5 overs), who were ably supported by Thomas , Moaz B, George, Max and Hamish G.
Team B replied with some fast scoring by Moaz B and Ziad N (both retired), while Thomas, Max and George kept the scoreboard moving along, and with Amanvir running everything possible at the end they posted 149. Mustafa H's three-over spell produced three excellent wickets, Ruan was particularly economical (1 for 7 off 5 overs), and Mustafa A always looked threatening. Charlie, Sid and Haresh took a wicket each and Chris L was excellent with his 1 for 10 off 4 overs. Newcomer Shaan G also impressed in his first match ever with some tight bowling.
Many thanks to our visitors from Gingins and Basel who journeyed up in the rain. We enjoyed having you and look forward to meeting again at the indoor tournaments in November.
A huge thanks to Monica, Gnome, Juliet and Marta for providing such excellent food and drink. You created a true pavillion out of our marquees. Thanks finally to Johan and Paul and all the many helpers who assisted with setting everything up and clearing away afterwards.
Zurich Under 15s play well to win comfortably against the Dragons in Basel (24th August)
A mixed Zurich Crickets U15/13 team played against an equally mixed Basel Dragons U15/113 team at the Bachgraben ground.
Zurich won the toss and elected to bowl. Zurich then made an early break-through after good captaincy when Tom was caught on the Cow-corner boundary just after Oli was moved into the position for this exact shot. Basel Dragons posted a good total of 146 runs in their 30 overs with a good partnership between Cameron and Thomas Butler, who both retired.
The Crickets bowled well with wickets going to Chris 6-22-2 and Ruan 5-19-1, with good economical bowling from Oli 5-18-0, Charlie 2-7-0, and Haresh 2-7-0.
The Crickets started their run chase shakily when losing Oli and Charlie early in the innings. Ruan and Dayn steadied the innings with a good partnership before Ruan was out for 27. Dayn scored fast and was retired on 30 having been involved in another good partnership with Chris Langford who also batted well, but was unfortunately run out when going for a second run with his score on 27. The damage, however, had been done by this time and Zurich Crickets scored the winning runs with a couple of good blows from Zeki and Haresh in the 25th over.
The game was played in a good atmosphere and spirit. We would like to thank Basel Dragons for the invitation and arranging the game on the nice sunny day.
Zurich Under 13s lose to Basel Dragons at Bachgraben in Basel (24th August)
Basel batted first in the 30-over game scoring 127 runs all out in 29 overs. Dayn took 3 wickets, giving away only 12 runs in 4 overs. Ayush has his debut with the team and took 1 wicket, giving away only 8 runs in 4 overs. Yash also took one wicket and Luke bowled and caught one. Luke took a second catch and Charlie and Ayush also took catches. Unfortunately, we gave away too many extras in byes and wides (56) and made it a tough target to get.
Basel bowled well, giving away far fewer extras and kept Zurich's score to 86 runs all out in 25 overs. Chris was the highest scorer with 13, Ayush with 9, Dayn 6, Luke 5 and Haresh and Zeki 3 each. Charlie also scored 3 and Oli 2.
ZCCC Under 11s win against the Dragons in close finish at Bachgraben in Basel (23rd August)
Basel Dragons U11s 101 for 8 lost to Zurich U11s 102 for 2.
The Dragons U11 played their first match at Bachgraben on August 23rd 2014, and it was fitting that this was against local rivals Zurich.
Zurich Crickets U13/U11 win against Basel Dragons at Deutweg (18th August)
Zurich batted first scoring 68 runs in 21 overs, having lost all their wickets. Chris was the highest scorer with 15 runs, followed by Haresh with 8, Dayn with 7 and Zeki with 6. Jasper, Shamas, Kabir and Adi all scored one against tough bowling. Our younger batsmen found the bowling from the Basel team difficult but helped the team to reach the total.
Zurich then gave an excellent display of bowling and fielding. We bowled 5 maiden overs, 2 from Dayn including a double wicket maiden, 2 from Vedant with some excellent bowling and 1 from Aryan. Kabir bowled a great over taking 3 wickets. Yash also took one wicket as did Adi. Jasper took 2 brilliant catches and Zeki and excellent catch as wicket keeper. Adi also took 2 excellent catches and Vedent as well. Shamas, Haresh and Aman also supported the bowling very well. With the team sharp in the field we kept Basel to a very low run rate and after 25 overs their score was only 63 runs. The accuracy of the Zurich bowling resulted in giving away only 22 extras which contributed to the win.
Zurich Crickets Under 13/15 XI win in close home match against Basel Dragons U13/15 team with fine performances by both teams (29th June)
Batting first in the T20 match Zurich posted 121 runs for only 4 wickets. Ruan top-scored with 20 runs including 1 six and 2 fours. He was well
supported by Nicolas on 17. Sohail hit 3 fours to score 14, while Chris scored 9, Hamish 6, Haresh 4 and Abheek 2.
Basel's innings was kept to 112 runs for 7 wickets through some excellent bowling. Moed bowled 4 overs with an average of 2 runs per over, including a maiden over and 1 wicket. Chris also bowled 4 overs at an average of 3.5 runs, taking 2 wickets. Ruan bowled at 4.3 runs per over, bowling 3 overs and taking 1 wicket. Abheek took 2 wickets and an average of 5 runs per over during his 4 overs. Hamish also took a wicket. Charlie volunteered to support Basel as they were one man short, scored 4 runs not out and bowled tidily.
Zurich Crickets/Basel Dragons senior XI succumb to Winterthur 2nd XI (29th June)
Posting just 117 for 9 off their 25 overs was always going to be tough to defend, but some fine bowling prevented Winterthur from scoring freely and only in the 23rd over did WCC find the winning runs.
Zurich Crickets U13 only lose one at Zuoz Tournament. (7th June)
It was a glorious sunny weekend of cricket with Zurich coming equal 2nd in the tournament after 5 games. Luke was awarded Best All-Rounder of the tournament taking the most wickets and making the most runs, but it was an overall excellent team performance by this young group of players.
ZCCC 1st XI lose first friendly match vs Winterthur CC (24th May)
Zurich Crickets finish as runners-up at the Under 17 Basel Indoor Tournament (22nd February)
Five teams from across Switzerland contended for the inaugural U17 Basel Indoor Cup with matches played in the Sport Centre Pfaffenholz and Gymnasium Baumlihof. Zurich Crickets’ underage players surprised the opposition with some stunning performances.
Only having one Zurich Crickets U17 player meant we would be heavily reliant on our U15 players. As it turned out our hosts Basel faced exactly the same predicament. In fact the whole tournament was hit by illness and last minute withdrawals, which meant that only Gingins and CDL were able to play with the full complement of eight players. A certain amount of horse trading enabled the tournament at least to get under way, even if some matches were reduced to 6-a-side.
In the first match from the word go, the weakened Basel team were heavily under pressure from the young Zurich one. The match against Zurich ended in a heavy defeat for Basel. Set a massive 120 to win, with both Ruan and Nic reaching retiring totals, and the first wicket only falling after 115 runs, Basel were bowled out for 70. Zurich Crickets bowling had been consistent and penetrating throughout, and Basel, with wickets tumbling at regular intervals, was unable to put together any partnerships.
Zurich Crickets’ second match against a much older Collège du Léman team also ended in a clear win for ZCCC. It began much as the first match. Nic and Ruan again kept their wickets, and again the first wicket fell late with the score already on 98. Set a target of 106 to win, CDL were immediately on the back foot when they lost two early wickets. Sohail’s three overs for 8 runs and a key wicket were exceptional, as was Ruan’s economical 3-over spell for just 9 runs – the same figures he returned in the first match. CDL fell well short on 78 for 5.
On the second day, ZCCC’s first match was against Cossonay CC. Zurich assumed control of the match, despite losing opener Ruan early, by batting patiently, accumulating runs off the poorer balls, and accelerating their run rate in the later overs. They finished on 110 for 2. Cossonay’s run chase began steadily, but the regular loss of wickets added to the pressure, and they fell comfortably short on 95 for 3 after some wonderfully tight bowling.
The final match of the tournament between the two unbeaten teams, Zurich and Gingins, began poorly for ZCCC. Unfortunate errors cost Zurich dearly, and partnerships just did not gel. The total of 62 was never going to be enough to defend, and though the bowlers fought bravely, in particular Ziad’s two key wickets, Gingins won the match in the ninth over.
Although Gingins ran out winners of the tournament, the real story for Zurich was about how they stunned the opposition by easily winning their first three matches against much older opposition, only falling at the last hurdle due to a couple of silly errors. There had been no long reflecting on the last-minute loss of their three Under 17 players. They just picked up the pieces and got on with it. Ball timing, confidence, the rapport between them, and the bowling was a revelation. Ziad stuck to his stock spin ball and deservedly was second best bowler, with Sohail also taking a handful of wickets. Nic won best batsman, followed closely by in-form all-rounder Ruan. Charlie took his first two wickets, which justifiably brought quite a smile to his face, and he was more than unlucky with his dismissal in the final match in his determination to give everything he had to keep us in the game. This is certainly something they won’t forget for a long time.

Best Batsman of the tournament was awarded to Nicolas Henderson (Zurich). He was followed closely by Zurich’s Ruan Kruger.
Best Bowler was Ashwin Vinod (CDL). He was followed closely by Zurich’s Ziad Nasrullah.
Many thanks to the players who helped us to make up the numbers, in particular Basel's Cameron. A special thanks from ZCCC to all those involved in the organization: tournament director Nick Wright, Simon Russell, the scorers Steve West and Richard Lewis, and to Caron Grantham for coordinating the food and drink.

Zurich players on fire after Hampshire coaches’ camp
This year is Zurich Crickets CC’s tenth anniversary. The club may boast many successes on the cricket field, both indoors and outdoors, but it is not just that. In an evening session of discussion with coaches and parents about the fresh outlook that the ECB have placed on their coach education programme, Hampshire’s John Cook and Chris Wheeler see the club as providing so much more than tuition. It provides a slice of familiarity to the children and youths who were playing before they moved to Switzerland and a great social “in” to a cricketing community that traditionally has had lots of nice people involved.
The fresh outlook that the ECB have placed on their coach education programme works really well for Zurich Crickets club and Europe as a cricketing continent, according to John and Chris. In the programme there is a new emphasis on reaching a better understanding of each player as an individual and how to work with this information. Players have very different needs when they come to the game; they have very individual qualities and talents. Nurturing these needs is key.
In two days of intensive individual sessions the players were able to establish with the coaches what they wanted to work on, what techniques they wanted to improve, and perhaps needed to in order to avoid injuries or to achieve greater success. Getting a good look at a player is crucial when deciding what the next step is in his development, and with three nets with bowling machines most players began with sessions to improve their batting.
There is no doubt that players were enthusiastic about the progress made in their sessions. All the sessions, as many as three each over the course of the two days, were taken very seriously. The coaches mentioned how very motivated they were because players were so willing to take information on board, try new things out and generally work hard. As one young player commented after his first session: “I am on fire!” He was no exception.
It was also great to see the work put in bringing such instant results. ZCCC took a very young U17 team to the indoor Basel tournament the following weekend (February 15/16), with only one player a true U17 player. The team included Ziad, Nic, Ruan, Charlie and Sohail, and they stunned the opposition by easily winning their first three matches against much older opposition, and only falling at the last hurdle against Gingins, who were also unbeaten, due to a couple of unfortunate errors. But it was the ball timing, confidence, the rapport between them and the bowling which was a revelation. Ziad stuck to his stock off-spin ball and was second best bowler of the tournament, with Sohail also taking a handful of wickets, while Nic won best batsman, followed closely by Ruan. And Charlie deservedly took his first two wickets as well, which brought a smile to his face. This is certainly something they won’t forget for a long time.
As John Cook had commented at the end of the Hampshire weekend: “Thoroughly enjoyable, and I must admit, in terms of overall ability the club has a lot of consistent cricketers! Obviously some of the boys we saw have grown over the years and can hit and bowl with quite a lot of power and pace. The younger and newer members are doing really well and took a lot in.” And Chris Wheeler added, “Another enjoyable and productive camp for your club. The quality of the players appears to get stronger year by year, even the newer additions, which makes our job more enjoyable. As always they like to absorb knowledge about themselves and their game. The club will need to buy a selection of helmets now for the spectators to protect them against the ferocious hitting that they now can all produce!”
Many thanks to John and Chris, congratulations to all the players who worked so hard, and we look forward to having Hampshire back in Zurich maybe before the end of 2014.
Zurich Crickets CC Under 13 reach semi-final of Gingins IndoorTournament
Zurich started the tournament with a match against CDL. Zurich batted 1st with a total of 83 runs. Luke scored a fast 26 runs with 2 sixes and 2 fours. Luke was well supported in the innings by Hamish and then Chris who was the 2nd highest scorer with 12 runs.
CDL then scored 87, wining the match. Hamish took one wicket with an excellent bowl and another wicket with a great catch. Dayn, Luke, Chris and Haresh also took one wicket each. However the bowling was generally not accurate and we gave away 53 extras which lost us the match.
The 2nd game was against Gingins. Gingins batted 1st with a score of 98. Luke, Hamish, Dayn and Haresh all took wickets and the bowling was much more accurate than the previous match, giving away only 28 extras. Vikram did a solid job as wicket keeper and stopped several. Zeki took a spectacular catch and the fielding was tight with a great team spirit.
Zurich´s innings totaled 101 and we won the match. Luke scored 29 (with 4 fours), Chris 20 and Hamish and Haresh 6. There was some excellent running which helped us build a commanding score.
Zurich won a place in the semi final against Basel. Basel batted 1st and scored 127 runs. Zurich bowled well and made the batsmen work for the score. Chris took 2 wickets with Luke, Dayn and Haresh taking one wicket each. Vikram took a great catch. Again the team spirit was excellent.
Zurich batted extremely well and scored 96. Dayn scored a solid 17 and supported Luke to 19 runs and Chris to 15 runs. Hamish also supported well and scored 5 runs. Again excellent running helped build the score. Despite not winning, the team showed great team spirit, good sportsmanship and this was an exciting match to finish the tournament.
Zurich Crickets U13 take 3rd place at Basel Dragons Indoor U13 Championship (12th/13th April)
DAY 1 – Saturday April 12th
Zurich Crickets vs Basel Nightfuries
Zurich batted 1st and gained a respectable total of 108 runs, receiving bonus points as the score was higher than 105. Chris was the highest run scorer with 24, Dayne got 12 runs, Haresh 7, Luke 4, Jasper 3 and Hamish 2. Unfortunately we gave away 3 run outs which would have given us the opportunity to increase the score further if we had held onto our wickets.
Bowling started very well for Zurich with Jasper taking 2 wickets in his 1st over, Hamish also 1 wicket and Dayne and Chris giving only 3 runs in each of their 1st overs. Zeki as wicket keeper also helped to keep the scoring low. Jasper took a 2nd wicket in his next over and Chris 1. This gave us bonus points as we took 5 wickets. Unfortunately the bowling that had started well slowly deteriorated with Zurich giving away 10 no balls and a total of 38 extras. This helped Basel Nightfuries to a total of 115 runs and the game.
Luxembourg vs Zurich Crickets
Zurich batted 1st again and achieved an excellent total of 138. Dayne was top scorer with 29, with Chris at 11, Luke at 10, Zeki and Haresh at 9 each. In total we scored 74 off the batt, with Luxembourg giving us 64 extras.
Again the bowling started well with Zurich taking 3 wickets for only 32 runs. Luke took 2 wickets in his 1st over and a 3rd in his next overs. Dayne also took 2 wickets, with Haresh and Jasper taking 1 each. Zeki as wicket keeper was unlucky not to take 2 wickets. Once again we gave away too many extras (32 in total), but thanks to some good fielding including good catches from Haresh, Dayne and Chris, we took all the wickets with Luxembourg having a total of 119.
That gave Zurich a win and bonus points for bowling alongside the points for batting. This also resulted in Zurich being 2nd in the group and going into the play-offs on Sunday with Basel Dragons.
DAY 2 – Sunday April 13th
Basel Dragons vs Zurich
Zurich batted 1st and were all out for 104 runs. Dayne opened and scored a solid 19 runs. Chris supported well and scored 22, Luke 8, Shamas 6 and Zeki 2. Unfortunately Zurich lost 5 wickets to catches, but did receive 47 extras.
Bowling from Zurich was much straighter than previous matches. However the Basel batsmen were strong and gained runs quickly. Luke took the 2 wickets that Basel lost, helped by Hamish who took a spectacular diving catch and this was the catch of the tournament. Basel beat the Zurich run total in 10 overs, scoring 72 from the bat and being given 20 runs in byes and 23 wides. That placed Zurich in the play-off for 3rd place.
Zurich vs Gingins.
In this final game Zurich batted 1st yet again and achieved a solid 132 runs whilst losing 5 wickets. All our batsmen scored runs to support this total, with Chris on 27 runs, Haresh with 16 runs, both Luke and Hamish on 9 runs, both Jasper and Zeki on 8 runs and Dayne with 4. There were some excellent touches pushing the ball into the side walls and giving time for a run (3 points each time). However, again we lost 2 wickets too cheaply to run outs.
Gingins responded with 111 runs, giving Zurich a well-deserved 3rd place. Luke took 3 wickets in 3 well bowled overs. Shamas also bowled one great over and took 2 wickets in his first tournament!. Dayne and Chris took one wicket each. There was some excellent fielding, with several good stops from Jasper, Hamish and Zeki, and Chris took 2 good catches.
Overall this was a good tournament with some exciting finishes to several games, some great individual performances and also some key learning for future tournaments. This team clearly has a lot of promise and will be looking forward to getting outside onto the newly laid cricket pitch in Winterthur for the first time next week.
